You know this sounds a little familiar, now although this came out years later, I remember watching a Gargoyles episode where Goliath went back in time to help a friend whom he didn't realize he had helped until the end of the episode, cause at the start we saw a statue of him created after WWII and then he is accused for abandoning during the war, and well you get the idea.

It is a great episode, one of the best of season 1 and the only episode to have a story plot (Uncle Chuck Free Will restored) from the 1st season continued in the 2nd season.

As well as showing why the Freedom Fighters do what they do.

It's also one of those rare episodes where Sonic is teamed with Bunnie and not Sally, usually we see the 3 mainly working together , but not this time, cause when they split into two teams of three, you noticed that Sally took Antoine and Rotor with her and Chuck took Sonic and Bunnie with him, thus resulting int the Sonic/Bunnie team up.

But overall, was and always will be a great episode.

Now if you think about for a moment, when SatAM was on it had a dark dramatic tone to it, while the comic book had a more lighter comedic tone to it, thus helping to differ it from SatAM.
